Chapter Women in Radio Science
In October 2022, a Chapter Women in Radio Science (WIRS) was established inside the URSI Italian Commission.

XXVI Riunione Nazionale di Elettromagnetismo (RiNEm 2026) – URSI & SIEm for Women in Science "Women in Science: From Awareness to Action"
On September 9, 2026, during the XXVI Riunione Nazionale di Elettromagnetismo (RiNEm 2026), held in L’Aquila from September 6 to 9, a plenary session entitled “URSI & SIEm for Women in Science” was dedicated to gender equality, inclusion, and the role of women in science and engineering. Organized by Paola Russo, the session brought together different perspectives and experiences on women’s participation in STEM. Invited talks:
- Sveva Avveduto (CNR Emerita and President of the Associazione Donne e Scienza) and Nicolò Marchesini (Istat and Secretary of the Associazione Donne e Scienza) discussed stereotypes, barriers, and policies affecting women in STEM.
- Patrizia Lamberti (University of Salerno, Chair of the IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group – Italy Section) presented the Italian IEEE Women in Engineering experience, focusing on the transition “from awareness to action.”
URSI GASS 2026 – WIRS Italy at the URSI Italy Chapter Meeting "Promoting the Women in Radio Science Community"
During the URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium (GASS) 2026, the WIRS Italy community participated in the meeting of the URSI Italy Chapter. On this occasion, Prof. Micaela Liberti presented the WIRS Italy group to the URSI Italy community, introducing its activities and highlighting its role in fostering networking, collaboration, and mutual support among women researchers working across the different areas of Radio Science. The meeting provided an important opportunity to increase the visibility of WIRS Italy within the national URSI community, strengthen connections among researchers, and encourage broader participation in future WIRS initiatives. During the WIRS session at URSI GASS 2026, Micaela Liberti, Chair of WIRS Italy, presented the main findings of the International Science Council report on the status of women and girls in science, while Francesca Apollonio, Treasurer of WIRS Italy, presented the activities of the Italian Chapter. The WIRS members attending URSI GASS 2026 also gathered for a group photo, celebrating a growing and active community of women contributing to Radio Science in Italy.

Building Connections for Future Research Projects
In March 2026, the WIRS Italy Chapter organized an online networking event aimed at strengthening collaborations among women researchers active in the different URSI Commissions. The initiative focused on the exchange of research ideas and expertise in view of future national research calls, including PRIN projects. Participants presented their research interests through short pitches covering topics ranging from radio astronomy and ionospheric propagation to electromagnetic sensing, wireless communications, inverse scattering, metamaterials, biomedical electromagnetics, and exposure assessment. The event concluded with a discussion on networking opportunities and future collaborative activities within the WIRS community.
URSI Italy Annual Meeting 2025 – WIRS Special Session "Pathways and Perspectives: Women Navigating Radio Science"
As part of the 2025 URSI Italy Annual Meeting held in Bologna, the WIRS Italy Chapter organized a special session dedicated to professional experiences, scientific achievements, and perspectives of women researchers in Radio Science. The session featured invited talks on women in engineering initiatives, RFID localization technologies, and research on electromagnetic metasurfaces, followed by discussion with participants. The event provided an opportunity to highlight scientific excellence and foster dialogue on career development and diversity within the Radio Science community. Speakers: Francesca Vipiana (Politecnico di Torino), Alice Buffi (Università di Pisa), Michela Longhi (Università Niccolò Cusano).
WIRS-Italy Young Scientist Event 2024
The WIRS Young Scientist event “Empowering Waves: The radiant Role of Women in Radio Science” took place on February 16th, 2024, at the Faculty of Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome. The event featured a dedicated workshop where 5 women radioscientists shared their inspiring experiences, providing insights into their scientific journeys and careers. An afternoon round table session provided an interactive platform for discussions and idea exchange on gender-related themes within the research and industry fields. Kickoff of WIRS-Italy chapter in Rome, Feb. 2023
On February, 21st, 2023 the kick off meeting sees the presence of all the member of the chapter. During the meeting the Chair of URSI Italian National Committee, Carlo Carobbi, wanted to share with us his satisfaction to see the realization of the Italian WIRS chapter. We had also the honour of being greeted by the Coordinator of WIRS International, Sana Salous. Here the program of the interesting meeting with our young scientists who presented their very interesting research activities.

Our co-chair Prof.ssa Alessandra Costanzo partecipated and presented at URSI-GASS 2023 at the workshop: “WIRS (Women In Radio Science) Chapters: Its Foundation and Future Perspectives”.
